Then perform simple subtraction.

You can also find a common fraction by converting the 2 1/9 and so on. Multiply the denominator (9) by the whole number (2) and then add the numerator (1). Then divide it by the denominator (9). Therefore this is actually 19/9. You can then find a common denominator for both the 19/9 and the 5/6. 18 is a good one. So 19/9 = 38/18 and 5/6 = 15/18. I found this by multiplying top and bottom by the number necessary to get to 18 (2 and 3 respectfully). Then you just perform simple subtraction in the numerator 38 - 15 = 23 and keep the denominator. So the answer is 23/18. After that you can simplify if necessary.
