What is the appeal of restoring antique hot rods like Ford Coupes from the 1930's?

Several magazines are devoted to this subject, like "Hot Rodz" and "Deluxe Car Kulture". It seems like alot of complicated work. Have you ever worked on antique cars or known a person who does this? What do they like about it?

  1. Nostalgia, an artistic statement and they're cool - small, light weight, go like h**l. I've been building rods since I was 16. I just love playing with mechanical stuff and making things better. It's really and art form or artistic release for folks who love mechanical stuff. The more complicated the better. Take an old car, make it better than it was, faster, more attractive, more functional and then have fun with it. When you're done you have something to show for your time that has some value and is an artistic form. Unlike folks who golf, fish or do other sports that have little to show for the time, money and effort put forth. The rod community (guys we hang with) are a fun bunch - mainly because we all think alike.

  2. Not to sound rude, but if you have to ask you don't understand. For me , the appeal of taking a neglected vehicle and making it into my "vision" of what it can be is a result of a long term love affair with cars. It can be labor intensive and expensive but since I don't drink, smoke or chase women it is a nice alternative hobby. It's a creative outlet for many that gives them a chance to sculpt a piece of movable art for people to enjoy. I especially enjoy seeing young people get involved in the hobby because it's a great alternative to going into gangs or on drugs.

  3. Art.  The ability to create something with your hands, your imagination and your commitment.  Some people work with paint, some with clay, some with wood....  There's nothing like the auto and the endless possibilities.

When a clay pot is done, it's done.  A Rod is never really done, it evolves - morphing into new looks at time goes on.

    You really should try it.

  4. Rod Kulture is easy to do and looks good.

semigloss paint and wide whitewalls make anything look good...even this..
