  1. Not sure about LANDSAT as I think this is quite an old system, but other satellites do have a role in monitooring volcanoes. http://www.esa.int/esaCP/ESAJRC1VMOC_Pro...

Direct geochemical and geophysical monitoring of volcanoes such as monitoring outgassing chemistry, onsite gravimetric (microgravity) surveys, Seismic surveys and high definition line surveys to determine uplift/tilt all require access ( which has safety implications) and also are labour intensive. Remote imaging by satellite is not able to gather direct seismic or geochemical data, but can give high definition altimetric surveys which when integrated over time can show bulging and collapse as the magma chamber fills. http://www.esa.int/esaCP/ESALE48708D_Pro... shows Etna "Breathing"

Satelite imagely can also safely give information during an actual eruption, where it would not be possible - both ground flow of lava and also tracking plumes of airborne dust and measure some geochemical data such as SO2 levels http://www.esa.int/esaCP/ESAIRB7708D_Pro...
