Question:

What is the appropriate dress for the current weather in Tokyo, Japan from mid-August to mid-September?

I'm visiting multiple locations in Japan in just a few days. I've already done research on the weather and many sources have said that it will be hot and rainy.

I'd like further embellishment on this on please. Maybe a response from a local or one familiar with the area? How hot will it FEEL? Since it is likely to "rain" (sprinkle or shower? I'm not sure...), will it really be in the 90s? Or colder? Is the humidity uncomfortable or is like Hawaii?

What kind of layers should I bring? What is too thick? I'm thinking of bringing a couple short jackets for layering and to protect my shoulders from rain. I'm also thinking of bringing an umbrella.

So any detailed discussion of these topics would be fantastic. I don't want to pack anything useless! Thank you!

  1. It's hot and humid (the temperature is in the 90s and it's probably as humid as Florida if not worse, the last time I went to Florida was years ago). The humidity is very very uncomfortable.

You should bring light clothing, jacket is definitely not necessary.  Tokyo has experienced a few thunder showers, so you will need an umbrella.  It would be helpful to bring a hat and lots of sun block so you don't burn from the blazing sun.

  2. >How hot will it FEEL?

    Very hot.

    >Since it is likely to "rain" (sprinkle or shower?

Shower. Sometimes, we have shower for a couple of hours in afternoon.

    >will it really be in the 90s?

    Yes, around 90.

    >Is the humidity uncomfortable or is like Hawaii?

    Very humid and uncomfortable.

I don't think you need layer. What you need is umbrella. Please keep in mind that Tokyo has extensive train network. You can go around Tokyo only by train, without walking outdoors. So only umbrella is enough.
