  1. In the States, we use 32 tons as an average for all empty cars.

    Of course they vary and thats just an avearage.

    Flat cars as light as 24 tons, aluminum coal cars are around 24 or 25 tons, tri-level auto racks will weigh over 40 tons and so will regrigerated boxcars.

    They don't all weigh the same... more info is needed.

  3. Easiest way to tell is look on the side of them, the full and empty weights are painted on the side.  For locomotives its painted in the cab.

    I believe there is a 286,000 pound gross limit before the car has to placed as oversize/overweight

  4. What type of railcar?  A C6 hopper can weigh around 65,000 lb, an alum. coal car around 45,000 lb.
