  1. Which ruins? There are ruins all over the Yucatan. Some are even in the hotel zone of Cancun (El Rey). If you want to see the ruins in Cancun you'll need 2.5 pesos (I think) for a ride on a city bus to the ruins. But if your talking about the ruins out of Cancun I wouldn't suggest hiring a cab, unless you want to take out a second morgage on your home. Rent a car and drive yourself. The roads are mostly highway, and they're all good.

  2. I've never heard of anyone hiring a driver but I would expect that it would be expensive. As well, apart from hiring a taxi I wouldn't know where to begin. As for safety, I guess that would depend on your ability to screen drivers, the driving itself is safe enough.

I agree with thouse who suggest renting a car. I know lots of people advise against driving (mainly because they want to sell you tours) but truthfully if you use common sense and are used to driving in the US or Canada, then it's pretty much the same thing. There's a couple of things to know about driving in Mexico but it's not that different, thoug you should try to drive in the day light hours.  ( http://www.rversonline.org/ArtMexDrive.h... ) Also, if you do end up going to Chichen Itza, the toll road is expensive but it's very impressive as well. It's very well maintained and almost completely free of traffic.

If you choose to rent a car then I would expect that to be about $65-$100 (US) for a day or two. If you went to Chichen Itza, the toll road would cost about $19 each way. Entrance into the ruins would be about $7.50, an English speaking guide would be about $50-$60.

Roads to most all of the ruins in this area are good, Tulum, Coba, Ek Balam etc. are all fairly easy day trips from the Cancun area. Chichen Itza is the only one that you would need to pay a toll for. (I know that the road to Ek Balam is also the 180 toll road but I believe you would exit before the first toll, though I'm not 100% sure.)

  3. It would better if rent a car and drive yourself. I have been to the Ruins. With another couple. That is what they did. If go with a driver he might rip you off. Be safe.
