  1. It's beautiful. It's the mouth of the Rhône river and the marshy landscape area called Camargue. Google it, you'll find a lot of info. It is known for its white horses, its  black bulls, flamingos, gypsy pilgrimage site and salt production. If you have salt of the La Baleine brand at home, that's where it comes from. The white hills of salt are blinding in the glaring sun, it's quite impressive.

    @ stephane m: yes, the Camargue is a little further west in driving distance but as the crow flies it does start about 30 miles west and I really wanted to promote this area because I loved it!


  2. Thirty miles west of Marseilles is Martigues, Etang de Berre,

    Chateaurenard, Vitrolles, Marignane not highly interesting, and anyway not the Camargue and Rhône which are still further.
