What is the art definition of line?

My teacher set us all out with a question..

and im quite stuck on this one..

she asked for a definition of what a line is

and then she drew a line on the board and then said that isn't a line . it was a horizontal line to my looking not straight though but free hand ... she said it started with the letter i.

please answer soon i need help... any sources to your answer will be helpful and great. no you are not doing my homework. this is just research.
