On average, what is the cost of a taxi and a bus in Bogota, Colombia? I'm traveling there and trying to save money by touring the city by a taxi or bus instead of a car. Anyone know? Thanks.

  1. Bogota is pretty safe, but rent a car for prevention. If you are going to a hotel ask for safe ground transportation in the counter. The average is

    Bus: 2 dollars

    Taxi: 15 dollars

  2. Taxi's are generally around 3,000 to 10,000 pesos depending on the destination..... Taxi's are not that expensive to be sincere.... I spent 11,000 pesos on a 30 minute trip....(which is lengthy...)...special note* they charge some extra fee when coming out of the airport....and always take the taxi from the dispatcher...

Transmileño (Bus system that uses a Train station format) These are about 1400 pesos a ride ...included a map of the system below...Would recommend this...

I would avoid the Regular Old buses unless you know where you are going and understand the signs on the bus windows...

Also...they drive like mad men..so if u do decide to get on...Hold on tight =)

The exchange rate is about 2,200 for 1 US Dollar...

this is a good tip....there are Citibanks around Bogota and this is how I normally get Cash.....it generates a better exchange rate and they don't charge commission ( if ur a Citibank Bank Customer..not sure other american banks...aslong as it has Cirrus/Mastercard your good.)  if you go anywhere else, especially exchanging cash....commission will be charged....

Some tourist attractions in Bogota are by walking distance, and mainly bundled together......some places can be potentially dangerous to get to by foot....Like going to Monserrate....take a Taxi to the base of the Mountain...avoid walking there....

North of Bogota is relatively more safer than the South and Centro....BUT

Please take caution wherever you go in this city...be street savvy, use common sense....don't reveal any expensive equipment, item..etc....and furthermore....always look like you know where you are going....I love this city and know it very well but I also acknowledge its potential dangers....

Don't rent a car...its not worth the Stress....and driving in Bogota is not for the faint hearted....

I recommend Day Trips to Zapaquira (Salt Cathedral) and Guatavita.....

I hope you enjoy your trip, Colombia in general is a very Beautiful country...and hope you'll leave with a lasting impression.

  3. Don't use the busese except in down - there cheap.

Taxis are best. rates are by zone and inexpensive also.

Current xrate is 2145 pesos to the $$ but you pay an exchange fee both ways.  I use an ATM card and get the exchange at no cost but am limited to $300/day.
