What is the average cost of a string bass? (orchestra, not bass guitar)?

My brother wants to play bass in orchestra when he gets big enough for it (he's starting out with cello). Just so you know, I'm not talking about a bass guitar. I'm talking about an orchestra bass. Does anyone know the average cost for a full-size? My brother and I want to pay for it because my parents say it's too expensive.

Prices start about $1,000 and a very nice student model starts about $2,000

You should try to find out as much as you can about the bass before you buy it.

Check Craig's list and look for ads in the paper.

3/4 is the size bass that is used by all professionals.
