What is the average distance between studs in walls?

16 or 24" on center in the US in the last 50 years or so.  In older houses, they could be almost any distance apart.

In older buildings, it's usually 16" on center.  Newer buildings have been mostly 24" on center.  If you want to be 100% sure, you could use a stud finder.  They're available at most hardware stores or home centers.  You can also just tap your knuckles on the wall, when you're over a stud the sound is "solid," between studs it sounds hollow.
