  1. Mexico has seen a population explosion in the past two decades with an estimated 50% of the population is under the age of 25.

Mexico takes those statistics in their census.  every five years and fertility rates every 10.

I saw a guy with his whole family on his motorcycle many times.

Large Roman Catholic population (90%)  "Be fruitful and multiply"

At my age (58) they look at me quite curiosly when I tell them I have never had kids.

My opinion ,most like two or three.

  3. If the total population is considered, I don't know..."Older" families have more children and are larger.  But young families are are now averaging 2 1/2 children per family.  I live in Mexico and know many families with parents in their fifties or sixties who have 1 or 2 children, others with 5 or more.  But, many families in their forties or younger have 1, 2, or 3 children. It is expected that thepopulation of Mexico will continue to increase for about 30 more years, then will level out and decline  as the older generation passes on.  Did some research on this for a question a few months ago, but Idid not save the references. I just found a really good graph which demonstrates the expected decrease in population that I just explained.

  4. Living in a middle class area of Mexico City, you'll see that young middle class families here have now as many kids as American families do. Usually 2 kids, sometimes 3.

I only knew one classmate my own age that had 5 siblings, but his family was from a rural area where you will could find couples that have up to 9-10 kids. Older generations used to have 7 children, but now even poor and uneducated people will rarely have more than 3.

It's true that the largest age group is under 25, but the census says that the largest age group in total in the country is people 15-25 years of age at this moment. That means that you're seeing less 10 year olds now than when I was a kid, ergo, the population of Mexico is still increasing, but the growth is slower because the husbands of poor families emigrate to the US, so the wife is left with her current batch of kids, and the people in my age group are waiting longer to get married like in any developed country and the few middle class people that do get married in their early 20's have less than 3 kids.
