What is the average house size in North America?

I'm doing a project on urbanization, and I thought this might be interesting.

On a television show I was awtching on The Travel or Discrovery channel they said the average american house is 2,500 square feet. It also said that the average British house is 1,000 square feet and the average Japanese home is about 700 square feet! It was about building homes in Tokyo

that are small and compact but have different storage options and tall ceilings in small rooms to get the feel of much space! Good Luck!

The question is a little unclear in my opinion.

If you mean number of people living in the house - 2.4 people

If you mean the average square feet of a house - about 2349 square feet

I couldn't find an official size. Maybe because home are measured differently in different parts if the country. I am guessing that the average house in the US is about 1800 square feet. I'm going to keep looking :)
