I lived for 8 years in Santo Domingo, and to answer this question, it is depending your lifestyle, even if you talk about "average" dominican people. Some people live with 5000 pesos and other lives with 10x more.. And I'm not talking about the rich ones. But lets say rent : between 5 and 12000 RDS, food and Beverage 6000 RDS, electricity bill average 700 RDS, gas 700 RDS, transportation 2000 RDS,........

Depends of the standars of your boyfriend and where he lives.

I currently lives in Santo Domingo.

To be middle class, and live in an apartment in a centric location (Naco, Piantini, Evaristo Morales or Arroyo Hondo neighboorhoods) you'll need monthly:

Apartment Rent: RD$15,000-RD$30,000 (depends on the amount of rooms and location)

Food: RD$15,000 or more if you add some brands

Electricity : RD$3,500 (with air condition turn on at night) or RD$1,500 (without aircondition)

Building Maintainance: RD$1,500

Building Gas Allowance : RD$2,000 (if it have a generator)

Cleaning Lady: RD$2,000 for 2 days a week plus $100 each day for transportation

Gas: RD$4,000

Going Out(dinner, club, rent movies): RD$8,000 (RD$2,000 weekly)

Phone: RD$1,000 or RD$3,000 with internet.

Cable: RD$800

I'll say minimum RD$60,000 monthly between the 2 of you.  That's without kids.  And living with a tight budget. And no savings. And no vacations or trips included there.

Double that for kids.

Bilingual Schools for Middle Class cost average RD$150,000 annually for Primary School.(less for Preeschool)

The first person was correct, the minium $500 US dollars a week (17,250 pesos a week appox).

For a gringo to live in a nice house with a decent living standard, I would guestimate about $20.000.00U.S per year . which is about 700,000 RD Pesos. See below.  Obviously much much less for a Dominican.
