I have a farm raised mare. she has never raced, but she was a lesson horse for 16 years and I'm trying to find out approximately how long she'll last. I know this won't be exact, I'm mainly curious b/c I've heard anywhere between 20 and younger to 35.

  1. 40 45 years

  2. it truly depends on the horse and how well it is taken care of

  3. LIfe expentancy is directly related to her care. Sounds like she has had good care and is still in good shape. I have had one of my Arabians die at 32 and one recently at 27.  The oldest one was of old age just laid down one sunny afternoon and passed away, the 27 year old had a long history of Melanomas and he had one internally and it grew around his intestines and he went fast when it obstructed his bowel.  Both were endurance horses and had regular worming and shots and the best hay I could find. I felt that the grazing was more important than the grain but used Southern states feed along with Purina. How long will she last? As long as she is loved and cared for, she will do well for a number of years. No one knows

You can help her with the joints by using flex supplements, they work pretty well to keep them moving. Also keep her working its when they stop that they tend to fade away.

  4. The numbers you gave are pretty accurate.  Of course, as the other posters have said, much depends on the overall care the horse receives.  Many thoroughbred stallions are still actively breeding in their early to mid 20s.  I have seen several riding thoroughbreds still being actively ridden in their late 20s and occasionally I hear of one older that 30 but the numbers reaching that age diminish rapidly after that.

  5. i would say that you are right i think that they will live anywhere from 20 -35 years just like any other horse would.

  6. She has a good at least 5 years on her. I'd say she would prob. last another 10. hroses generally live around 25-30. It depends if she has ever been sick etc.

  7. it depends on how well the horse is taken care of and how healthy he/she is and how hard they were raced if they were....

  8. TBs usually live to be about 30 for farm raised, racers usually only until their 20's.
