What is the average lifespan of a common bird?

My dad guessed it was around two and a half years, but my brother said it was more around five. Any common type of bird that you would occasionally see in your backyard.

It varies by species...not all wild birds live for the same number of years.  Some live 2 years...some 4-5 years..some 7 years.  Some wild birds have been known to live for up to 12-15 years....once again depending on species.
