  1. Good surge protector, room temperature control, and dust removal from cooling vents on TV will insure a longer life of the set.  Friend has plasma.  He say plasma seem to heat up more.  Why do you think the computer industry has embraced LCD?

  2. i was told by an "expert" that LCD tvs have a longer life than plasma screens

  3. First and foremost, there is almost no difference in lifespan between a plasma or LCD TV. It will vary more based on construction quality than whether it it one technology or the other.

Most have a published lifespan of 50-60,000 hours. But that is just the "half-life" of the light source, which would be the actual panel in a plasma TV or the backlight in an LCD TV. That means that after 60,000 hours, the TV will be half as bright as the day you bought it.

If you watch TV 8 hours a day, every day, that's 20 years.

The problem is that other things like IC chips and power supplies are far more likely to expire before the light source, especially in situations where the TV is on for more than 5 or 6 hours at a time or installed in a cabinet with poor ventilation. So if you want a TV to last a long time, buy a good one (not a Vizio or Insignia or other no-name brand) and keep it in a well-ventilated and dust-free environment.

  4. Depends on the manufacturer.  Panasonic Plasma and LCD units are rated to last 20+ years based on their testing.  Both technologies are totally maintenance free.  I would think that any quality unit would last that long, some of the cheaper ones, not.  Buying a Plasma or an LCD is another instance of you get what you pay for......

  5. It should last at least as long as you want it to.  Think about how fast TV technology is changing.  What's the oldest set you have in your house now?

In most cases, by the time any TV you buy now has worn out, you'll have long since upgraded it anyway.
