Also according to wikipedia the average monthly salary is about 1500 UAH however in another yahoo answers thread it was stated that a public teacher makes 80 UAH per month which makes no sense.

  1. 1500 UAH actually sounds a little high for the "average" salary, but it takes many factors into account.

Government officials make a crazy amount of money compared to the rest of the country (~$3000/mo). High-tech people make the $300-500 range, many business people make good (unreported) income. But it also does not take into account the great number of unemployed, either.

Teachers make about $75-80 USD, not UAH, at the elementary level. That goes up to roughly $175 for a seasoned university professor or school director.

    --- Edit ---

Larry needs to visit Ukraine and spend some time there, before he listens to what the government censored papers say.

Unemployment and underpayment is a big problem, which is why nearly 14 million Ukrainian citizens have left to take jobs in Western Europe (many of them illegally).

Many people in Ukraine work "under the table", at least partially, which makes it nearly impossible to get accurate statistics on salary and unemployment. But believe me... Ukrainians do not "average" $652/mo (3000 UAH).

  2. According to official data of the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine, ... At the end of 2007 the average salary in Kyiv was UAH 3,040 a month, while in Zaporizhzhya it was only UAH 1,400.

At the same time, unemployment in Kyiv is practically nil and the labor market in practically all spheres of economic activity is growing and Kyiv continues to attract more and more Ukrainians from the provinces, who are clearly hungrier for work than some Kyivans and are therefore more motivated and interested in career growth. (excerpt from story in Kyiv Weekly newspaper)

    One UAH (hryvnia) = 0.217 US $ as of 19 July 2008.
