What is the average rate for transcription services? i was asked to transcribe, what would be a fair rate?

There are many ways to charge for transcription:

By character, line, keystroke, page, time, etc.

Regardless of the rate you charge, make sure to ask your customer for an advance which represents a 50% fee for the work to be completed.  This advance represents the customer's ability to pay the final bill.  Again, without such an  advance -- no work will be commenced.

Call some of the companies in your area that do this and ask for their rates, then you will have a better idea what to charge.  If you are new to the business and don't have alot of references, you will probably want to at least half their rate.
