I live in LA and got a job offer in Seattle. I was wondering how much should I ask for relocation?

  1. How much is it going to cost you to move?

That's how much to ask for.  But most companies won't pay anything at all, or they'll pay a couple thousand.

  2. I would get some quotes on moving and what it is going to cost you.  Then ask for that much, if give them some specifics you are more likely to get a higher amount rather than just throwing some number out there.

  3. This varies massively by job grade.  If you are an entry level worker, then you are likely looking at a flat sum ($2500 to $5000), if you are a middle manager, they may be willing to pay for a professional move, some temporary housing, and perhaps more.  For executive level moves, home sales commissions, and many other benefits become possible.  My last three corporate relocations cost my employer about $50k to $60k.  The costs add up.

The best thing to do is to reasonably assess your job grade and whether or not relocation is a "deal breaker" for you.  Then, try and figure out what it will cost and "ask" them what they can do to help you move (rather than demanding a certain sum or items).  If you rent, is there a termination clause that allows for no penalty if you move (I always asked for one and was rarely turned down).  Next, can you rent a truck rather than using a professional moving company? (much cheaper). You can get quotes for trucks and trailers online pretty easily.  FINAL NOTE: The less costs you incur for them, the better off you generally are.  I have seen people get a new job and really sour the relationship by going hog wild at the company's expense on their relocation. Treat their money like it is your money and you'll probably be fine. Good luck.

  4. When I was asked to relocate, the company called the moving company, they called me and came in and gave the company a price.  The movers came in, packed up everything, hauled it to the new location and unpacked it.  All I did was pack a few clothes like I was going on vacation and they did the rest.  The company paid all the cost and then added it to my W2 the next year.  When I filed my taxes, I had deductions for my moving expenses and income from the cost of the move.
