So for instance, if we have two people in middle management making the same salary with the same experience and one goes on mat/paternity leave. & subsequently every once in a while has to take some time off a few months after the leave to check on the baby or what not. Say they have to go home early every once in a while as well.

At the end of the year, what's the average standard salary deduction you would expect to see from the employee who went on mat/paternity leave? (answer to the best of your knowledge)

  1. typically for a salary employee, there is no deduction. it would depend on the company but most allow the standard 6 weeks off and also, when you leave early you are expected to still have your work done or to make up your time by working through lunch or coming in early.

  2. I am paid for the job I do- and I am expected to do it regardless of the time I take off.   You should not see any deduction.  But women taking time off is exactly the reason we are given for the wage gap, ie paying women less for the same job.  Nonsense isn't it?

After all the guys who go golfing on company time aren't penalized.

  3. EDIT: OIC your point. But the fact is, more and more workplaces are building parental leave into packages as a way of attracting quality staff. It's becoming an industry standard.

    Deduction? What deduction?

Sorry, I don't understand your question. Why would they have a salary deduction at the end of the year?

The person may have lost pay if they're in an industry that doesn't support paid parental leave, but why would they have a deduction?

Also, wouldn't it depend on the base salary or the package what the amount was?

    Cheers :)
