What is the average salary for a British Diplomat?

It has always been my ambition in life, but I am not from a wealthy family and I don't know whether I will be able to secure my future, in this ever-more expensive country, whilst pursuing this career that I want.

What grade? Diplomats aren't all senior. Particularly at a large embassy, such as Washington, there's everything from the ambassador (probably £125,000+) to a junior clerk (perhaps £18,000). My father worked at the UK Mission to the UN. His salary wasn't massive, despite quite high rank. However, expense allowances were absurd, particularly before 1979.
