  1. starting salary varies depending on where you apply to teach.  But basic salary starts at around high $20,000.  Again depending on where you are.  Where I am located, about 50 miles north of San FRancisco, the starting salary for a high school teacher may be $5~6000 less than in the city schools (for higher living expenses etc)

Again, if you have a PhD, then it's another story.  The above example is for a BA, BS degree.  Benefits and pay schedule varies tremendously depending on your background and experiences.

  2. In Michigan starting with 0 experience and just a BA is on average about 37-38k, I'd say the average teacher makes between 60 and 65k though.

In the United States, I'm just going to guess without going too much into population (more teachers in CA and NY etc.) that the average starting is around 32k and average overall is around 48k.

The reason why the averages would be high is because a lot of teachers are old and have taught for long enough to max out their pay scales.  And I don't know about cities besides Detroit, but Detroit pays pretty well, they start around 38k and go up to 80k or so after 10 years with all of the credentials possible.  So if NYC and LA follow suit that might bring up the average a little bit.

  3. Again it depends on which state you are talking about. I postulate that beginning teacher salaries at the university level for CA is higher than say in Alabama or Georgia. I say do some research and look at teachers' salary schedules.

  4. Way too much in my area.  In my district (IL), starting full pay is over $32k.  Average is over $55k.  It is truly obscene.
