  1. Speed in circular orbit -

    GEO - 3.07km

    GPS - 3.87

    LAGEOS - 5.70

    HST - 7.56

    ISS - 7.68

  2. Depends on where they are, obviously... The low-Earth orbiting satellites (Like the shuttle, the ISS, and others) move about 17,000 miles per hour. That's up to an altitude of about 300 to 400 miles.

There are also Geo-synchronous satellites, that orbit the Earth *exactly* once per day, (most TV and communications satellites orbit here, about 23,600 miles up), and move about 6,200 miles per hour.

The higher the orbit, the slower the motion.

  3. Jason,

They don't always orbit.  Sometimes you can make an elliptical orbit and have the satellite act like it's stationary over a geographic area.  Other times, you can make it sweep a geographic area...another ellipse.

Average speed under the circumstances can be somewhat elusive.

  4. 8 km/s or 28,800 km/h!
