  1. It's highly dependent on what gearing one selects and your cycling fitness, ability to spin, how fast you like to ride etc.

  2. its all down to the rider, not the bike, although a lightweight road bike will perform better than a heavy clunker.

In my youth, many years ago, I used to do about 20/22 miles an hour for about 2 hours, but I didn,t like fixed wheels, too dangerous, but we did have double sided wheels with a fixed sprocket one side and a freewheel the other, not seen those for years.

  3. Trevor - Flip-Flop hubs are still quite popular. They come with the Speciallized Langster for example (and I assume most other new Singlespeeds)

  4. MR is right, depends on the gear and rider. I used to ride a fixie all the time. I had my gear calculated to spin 100 rpm at 16 mph. That way I could really spin. Made climbing easier and if I had a safe straight-a-way I could get up to 20 and really spin out. I would usually average about 15 mph. Does this help?

  5. It depends on many factors:

    -Your gear ratio

    -The strength of the rider

    -Where you are riding (hills)

    -What tires you have

    -Wind

A fixed gear could be just as fast, or slow, as any other bike.
