  3. Lightening is basically just a very big spark. A spark is just a flow of electrons from one place to another.  

    The edge of the flow of electrons is not sharply defined. It's a bit like asking the average thickness of a gust of wind.

    However for a simpler answer. If caught on film the glowing bolt normally appears 1 to 5cm wide.
