  1. Usually casual games without time control last usually 10–60 minutes, but in famous chess turnaments there are time limitations.

  2. Chess tournament time controls are a little complicated.

    But, here goes.

There are (usually) Primary and Secondary time controls in a standard tournament.  When I played years ago it was common to see 50 moves in the first 2 hrs and then 25 moves per hour after that.  These times are per side.  If you've seen a chess clock it is actually two clocks.  You press a button on your side and the other persons clock is running.

A typical tournament game might be 2.5 to 3.0 hrs.  But they can run quite a bit longer.

  3. On a reguler tournament its usually active time which is usually 15-25 minutes it depends on the the Tournament Director, but on a famous tournament the longest i've played is 90 minutes and +30 secs every move, it does take a long time for a grandmaster to think so they need that much time to think and the more the better, but again it really depends on the tournament director or the organization.

  4. Hello,

Please see my web page - link below?  Click on 'C' in the dictionary and scroll down to 'CLOCK'?  I hope this is helpful for you.

    Yours sincerely,

  5. In international chess tournaments the standard time limit used to be 40 moves in 2 and 1/2 hours.  If a game wasn't finished within 40 moves, there would be subsequent time controls of 15 moves per hour, so in theory a game could last for weeks.  But 40 moves was probably also fairly close to the average length of games between top masters.  So that would put the average time per game close to 5 hours - 2 1/2 hours per game for each player.

I know that lots of events are going with faster time limits.  That would, of course, tend to reduce the average time per game.

  6. When I played it was commonly 40 moves in 2 hours, then 20 moves per hour after that.

Back then, a 5-round Swiss System played on the weekend could start earlly Saturday morning and run until Sunday very late in the evening.

Today the time controls are a lot faster.

You can play a tournament in one long day.
