  1. On the average NZ wages will be lower than in Australia.  I do not know what mechanic's wages will be in Australia but you can contact a potential employer, you can find dealers in Australia and New Zealand through MB web sites.  I own an old Benz and use an independent - "MB Spares & Service" in Canberra, they have their own website. There are independent MB specialists in most of the larger cities.  In most cases wages are negotiated with an employer.  You would probably be looking at around $55,000 the first year though, at least.  This is a guess.

American think Australian taxes are high.  They are higher than in the US but are lower than in many other countries.  Income tax on wages is paid as you earn and goes up on a sliding scale, the more you earn, the greater proportion of tax you pay.  On say $60,000 you will be paying maybe about $20,000 income tax, net income $40,000, these are very rough round figures.  There is also a 10% goods and services tax similar to UK VAT.  This does not apply to fresh food.  There is no variation in sales taxes from one state to another as in the USA, but prices do vary.

Petrol / gasoline was AU$1.33 per litre when I filled up several days ago.   There are extra taxes on some things like cars but you generally don't buy these every day.  You can buy a decent used car for around AU $6,000, more money will get you a better one of course.  A Benz will be worth an extra $1500 or so, you will know which models to avoid.

There is a housing shortage in most places so rents and houses are expensive.  In Canberra a modest 3 bedroom house, one bathroom, convenient locality  will cost well over AU $400,000, that is more than US$330,000.  Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne house prices are comparable or higher.  I have been out of the rental market for 28 years so I have no idea what rents are, except that several years ago a friend was paying more in rent than I was on a mortgage.  (LOL).  His place though was fairly swank.

  2. Depends on the metro area and the dealer. New Zealand doesn't have as many luxury cars as Oz. Keep in mind, your rent in both countries is typically charged weekly, your taxes will be high (compared to the US) and most imports will be expensive.
