Do you have a "special" rank or anything?

  1. As the first respondent said, you're commissioned an Ensign (O-1) either through the Naval Academy or an NROTC unit.  Those who enter as civilians are commissioned upon completion of basic-flight training.

And YES, you also are normally a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) (O-2) by the completion of type-training (jet, helo, or turbo-prop).

What truly distinguishes a pilot from any other Naval Officer is their DESIGNATOR... a four-number code that designates your qualifications.... Aviators are 131X (X denotes Regular(0), Reserve(5), or full-time Support (7)).

I was a 6325 (LDO, Aviation Operations Officer)

  2. You are commissioned a Ensign

But generally you are a Lt JG by the time you complete Flight training.

  3. Many pilots are LT's (O-3), though when they are going through flight school they are are LTJG

  4. No you don't get a "special" rank.  You are a Commissioned Officer like all the rest.
