Question:

What is the benefit of taking an AP course rather than Honors?

I understand that passing the AP exam allows you to get college credit, however it seems that most colleges actually don't accept AP credit or limit your AP credits. My school doesn't offer many courses, and so I am considering taking statistics or environmental science through an online program. Would it be worth it to take the AP courses for the two, or should I instead take Honors? Would there be any benefit other than college credit? How do colleges view AP and Honors courses?

  1. As well as college credit, AP's looks great on your college application.  Top colleges expect you too have taken the most advance classes you can handle.  AP's also "weight" your academic GPA, meaning can add extra points towards, even raising it above a 4.0.

  2. If you plan to apply to top colleges, they will expect you to have taken your school's hardest classes. Your counselor will have to check a box on the school report that goes with your application that ranks your course load compared to what the school offers. If you took honors where APs were available, top schools will discount your GPA and you will be a weaker candidate.

  3. AP, if you pass the AP test, give you college credit depending on what the college asks for.  Honors is just a more advanced level of study within your grade.

  4. Take the level that is appropriate for your abilities and motivation.  There is so much pressure on teenagers to take AP classes, but take it from me:  most high schools want you taking AP classes so that the high school looks better to the community.  There's plenty of time to earn college credit AT COLLEGE if you don't want to give in to the pressure now.

Of course, if you like a challenge and want to see what a college level exam is like you can try the AP.

Definitely, talk to people who have taken these classes and see what they have to say as well.

    Good luck.

  5. if you take an ap class at the end of the year you have a choice to take an AP test... for example I took AP History... i had to pay a fee for the test and some schools might accept it some wont because it isnt equivalent to their school course.  you take a risk but if anything just take honors and when you get to college do what you need to graduate.  talk to your school guidance councelor too and they will explain it more.
