What is the benefit to children’s learning of knowing about their own background and community?

it helps them form their own identity, what better basis is there to build your identity than an inheritted background, community, family and culture.

It gives them a sense of "self". They realize they "belong" (to a family and a community). It makes them feel proud, important, wanted and safe.

Let the kids make a book from construction paper of their family, maybe the parent(s) will send in a photo (good bulletin board theme here), ask the fire dept for a "visit", they will come with a fire truck and gear, etc...
