  1. Colleges want to see your writing abilities. I'd recommend taking the writing section just in case. Also, the prompts aren't completely horrid. They're usually ones you can relate to unlike general SAT prompts.

  2. The benefit is that most colleges want the act plus writing, and isn't the point of taking the act to get into a college?

    If it's your first time, and you're not in the your senior year, then take the act without writing to practice. But remember, your score won't be any good (even if it's high) to some colleges if you don't take the writing section. I guess it all depends on where you want to go.
