  1. i know nothin at all bout surfing , or boards. but ill look up some links & weight stats if ya want.

  2. try a fish. its a long board in a shortboard size.  it is wide and thick, for easy pop ups and paddling.

then when you start to get good it has really good balance and turning.

it teachs you how to have clean smooth turns.

sencie your 5 foot you should probibly get like a 5'2-5'4.

  3. Well, I did find a link for surf boards for beginners, but I am not sure about the weight.

  4. I hope I can be of some help. If you are interested in your story being accurate, there are afew facts you might want to consider. Some of the links I'm including may be more helpful than what I have to say, though.

Surfing is an ocean sport, to do it right, you have to be at home in the ocean, with its currents, rips, undertows and sometimes big waves. I don't just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. I have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don't want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave.

Lessons are usually the best way to start, unless you are an adolescent or young adult with lots of pals who surf who can teach you. Go to a real surf shop. The folks there can hook you up with lessons, and even rent you a board to learn on.

Be careful of what you read here on line. There are lots of really well meaning young folks who have neat answers about surfing, but at 55, I tend to classify anyone under 25 as a kid. After I found this site, I figured that I could answer a few questions, and spread the 'good news' of surfing. After you learn to swim and master the ocean, get your REAL advice from a surf shop, where industry professionals earn their rent money selling surfboards.

Most people learn best on long boards, although I have seen lots of surfers start on a short board and master it. In the long run, there are NO RULES on waht type of board you haven to learn on. Long boards are ideal for learners. There are also good internediate length boards to learn on, funshapes, mini-mals and some hybrids. There are good things about both long and short boards. I ride both (one at a time , of course). In the mid sixties, like almost everybody else, I started on a longboard. I went shorter and shorter every summer, during the 'short board revolution.'

This link takes you to page of ads for surfboards. Each one of the board has  recommended weight range. Check out each board, and you'll get an idea of the type suitable for your protagonist. Again, as a beginner, she is better off  learning on a larger, more bouyand surfboard. So some of the short, performance boards that are great for a hundred pounder, might be a little tough for a beginner to ride. Age doesn't matter in the surfboard business, but it will probably affect the characters associated with your heroine, and whether or not they surf.

If she came to and she alreday was at home in the water, and had taken a few lessons, I might recommend a nice fun-board, mini-mal, fairly short, around 6'6". If she was a pretty confideent and competant beginner, I suggest a nice little retro fish, around 5'6". But speculation, even for a fictional character, is pretty difficult. Surfing is very personal. THE REAL BOTTOM LINE IS: Go to a Surf Shop, not a computer. I don't know if you live near a coast, so you may not be able to just stop in the neighborhood surfshop (there aren't many in Nebraska, I guess), but at least try to reach out for a surf retailer on line or by phone. The pros there can give you the right answers!! Good luck!!!
