I found out that flat tradjectories and huge energy delivered to the target aren't important for bench rest shooting. So what calliber is a real good one?

Thanks in advance.

  1. My answer before readin the replies was some 6mm wildcat round..... All the long range guys use 6mm and have for years... the guy above me is probably correct.

  2. 50 cal browning necked down to a 338 win mag on a barret action and shaw barrel

  3. I don't keep up with those things, but last I heard (some years ago) 6.5-284 Norma was the fad of the day.

  4. You asked about benchrest cartridges.  The cartridge that holds the current NBRSA 6-target 1000-yard world record aggregate is the 6mm Dasher.  I would say that this statistic makes the Dasher the best.

The perfect 1000 yard benchrest cartridge is the one which enables the projectile to remain supersonic at 1000 yards, has very little recoil, and propels a projectile with a high enough ballistic coefficient to minimize the effects of crosswind.

  5. 6mm BR has been used to set alot of 1000 yard records and 6.5-284 is still very popular.  If you want good info on bench rest shooting and accurate rifles and cartridges you should get Precision Shooting Magazine

  6. I'd venture to say the .308 winchester, it seems like all the sniper rifles I've seen are .308's, so it must be a predictable round.  Other than the .308, I'd say .50 BMG if you can afford one.
