I have a 4 wheel drive (AWD) V8 model.

The specs say I can tow safely 5000 lbs.

Just checked on the mercury website.

  1. Safely? Nothing. If you want to risk it anyway, and you have the upgraded tow package with the class III/IV hitch, maybe one horse in a brenderup. And even then stay out of mountain/hills, don't drive in bad weather, and keep it well under the speed limit. The mountaineer has a towing capacity of 3500 lbs. Hauling live weight is different than say, a boat trailer. You need to be sure what you're hauling with is capable of more than what you've got hitched, and with such a short, unstable wheelbase, you want to be towing waaaayyy under the maximum.
