  1. Ruger makes GREAT guns, but my personal .22 auto rifle is a Marlin model 795, I bought it brand new at a gunshow for $115, kinda picky on ammo, but once I found what it like(which happens to be Remington's Golden Bullet), Ive never had a failure to fire, feed, or eject.  The last time I looked at 10/22's they were considerably more than a Marlin, but either way they both make great rifles.  And just my personal opinion here, but the Marlins look 10X better than the Ruger in stock form, if that matters to you.

  2. Yes, this is the gun many prefer, the magazines are reliable and this is my personal favorite. I like the fact that you can purchase extra magazines and stick them in your pocket instead of stopping to reload. Marlin also makes an excellent semi-automatic rifle the model 60.

  3. Great rifle, great price and LOTS of aftermarket stuff for it.  If you have the money, you can really trick one out.  Heck, if you have two of them and buy the device from Cabela's, you can make them into a machine gun.

  4. I can't think of a more fun .22 to shoot then a Ruger 10/22. It is really the only .22 to have, if you want to own just 1 rifle. You will like the handy size, the accuracy, the customizable features, and the high capacity magazines. they are just plain fun to shoot.

  5. Marlin model 60.  I've got one that's been in the family for 3 generations, and it is still reliable and incredibly accurate.

I took it out to a Boy Scout shooting camp where I volunteer as an instructor.  It was a big event, with scout troops from all over the state coming in for some rifle fun.  We had about a dozen shooting stations.  Most of the instructors brought 10/22s and laughed at be for the tube loading model 60.

Each scout got 50 rounds of ammo, then rotated out.  We shot for over 10 hours straight.  In all that time, I had zero malfunctions.  Also, loading a tube is NOT hard on your thumb.  The 10/22 guys were all nursing blisters and cuts from mag loading.  I used a tube speed loader (link below), which is both easier and faster than loading the mags.

I've shot several 10-22s.  They are accurate and reliable, but I positively hate the magazines and the operation of the action.  Go with the Marlin, and you'll never regret it.

  6. i don't have experience with multiple 22's but i got a remington 597 and i love it dearly. it has a bunch of after market upgrades and such as I'm sure the others do too. just do some research and see whats best for you. don't get tricked by the magazine feed issues the gun had as you may encounter if researching it as i did, this was when it was first released. remington fixed the problem long ago, and there are also high capacity mags for it as well. plus it looks very nice. range officers have asked me what gun it is and what caliber. they seem surprised its a 22. well i love it and that's my 2 cents. there's nothing better that getting your lovely 22. make it a beaut.

  7. If you get a Marlin model 60 you'll be good to go....Not much aftermarket stuff for it because it doesn't need anything.

  8. get the marlin model 60

  9. You thought correct. The 10-22 will last 10 lifetimes should you treat it well.

I own a basic one, and a laminate stock bull barrel one. Both shoot the same.

Dont get lost in the frills.

  10. None of the current crop of commercial .22 automatics are bad. In my opinion though, the best .22LR semi-automatic for your money is the Savage model 64. Its not as pretty as the Marlin 60 or Ruger 10/22. However its reliable, accurate, and retails for less than the competition at most big retailers. The Marlin model 60 comes next, followed in third place by the Ruger 10/22 due to the cost factor.

The reason you'll see so many people recommend the Ruger is its far more customizable than the Savage model 64 or the Marlin model 60. Folks tend to want to tweak their rifles. They want to get a custom stock. Or different sights. Or an aftermarket bull barrel...
