Im 32 and am looking for a training or fitness getaway. Cleansing, hiking and/or training. Need something challenging and intense, like a 30 day transformation to kick start myself. Not lazy and not looking for cooking classes or nutritional education. Any GOOD suggestions??

Thanks

  1. First let me say I think you've picked the right place to go. Every time I go to Thailand I lose weight and I'm not even trying to.

The place is very hot and humid and you sweat a lot (drinks lots of water!) which is not only cleansing but helps burn fat. I know some people say you only lose water-weight from sweating but it's not true. When you're body is in that kind of heat it burns a lot of calories trying to cool itself down. (Honestly, when I'm there I eat and drink with reckless abandon and I come home thinner from all the walking around and constant sweating).

As far as which activity, I agree with the other posters that Muay Thai would be a great way to get in shape. Even if you're not into fighting, the training is intense and works your whole body. Plus, if anyone ever messes with you you'll be good at defending yourself.

Muay Thai used to be a Thai only sort of thing but now they've become open to training foreigners.

If Muay Thai isn't for you, or you want a variety you could also head up north and go trekking. They have different kinds of programs and some of them can be pretty physical. We're talking lots of hiking.

The other great thing about Thailand is there's tons of local fresh fruit and vegetables, and the Thai diet is pretty healthy. Being away from processed food for 30 days will surely do your system some good.

Man, I can't wait to go back. Good luck.

  2. You could learn Muay Thai at Vorapin boxer training center. .

Training occurs from 8:00am-10:00am and again from 3:00pm -6:00pm. An introductory class sets you back a mere 400 baht, and they have special deals for packages of classes.

  3. You could go up to Issan and help my wife's family harvest the rice.

  4. try this website and looking for place name " Fairtex Sport Club & Hotel" they are specialize for kick boxing training http://www.discovery-thailand.com/Pattay... they also have a lot of interesting facilities such as A First Class Gym, Aerobic Studio, 4 Tennis Courts, 5 Badminton Courts, Squat Court, Boxing Ring, Swimming Pool, Football Field, Basketball Field, Rock Climbing, Juice Bar, Healthy Spa, Restaurant, Locker Room with Sauna and Stream – all in one location. surely you can enjoy your time there... have a nice trip  ahhh, booking through that website you can get discount up to 75% ... G'luck http://www.discovery-thailand.com

  5. The best exercise you are going to get is to grab an 22 yo Thai girl, a bottle of Johnny Walker and head off to a quiet hotel in Phuket for 30 days. I guarantee you will come back exhausted!

Joking aside - because of the heat - Thailand is not good for some kinds of aerobic exercise. I'm a very keen runner but found Thailand too hot for running - I also got plagued by wild dogs. Ditto hiking. Apart from short walks I found the heat pretty tough. If you really want to do hiking your best bet is to go up North to Chiang Mai or Chinag Rai - it'll be cooler. Go in the cool season too.

I switched to a combination of open water swimming and gym and noticed significant gains.

The gym in my apartment complex was much better than anything I'd seen back home and was air-conditioned.

Swimming wise I used an outdoor pool or just swam in the sea. I found it safe to swim parallel to the shore. Don't try that in Pattaya though, you'll get cut to pieces by speed boats.

The other thing you should try is a traditional Thai massage - a proper one - not a hand job in some dump. I had one massage that completely removed a 10 year back problem I had. I can't recommend a proper massage highly enough.

The other things I did were sea kayaking, snorkeling and scuba diving. All highly recommended. If you aren't PADI qualified the snorkelling is the next best thing.

Eat light, swim hard, get a younger willing companion and you will come back feeling like a new man!
