I'm interested in setting up my home theatre system and wanted to know what brand was the best and where I can get it. I would like to get it from Best Buy since it is more convient for me. In other words, what is a really good 5.1 surround sound system that is sold at Best Buy?

  1. If you're on a budget consider the Sony DAV-HDX279W home theater in a box. ($400). For a little bit more, you can get the Polk Audio RM880 5.1 surround sound speaker set (~$450). Pair those with a Onkyo TX-SR505 av receiver (~$250) or better and your good to go. You could get em cheaper or others that suite your needs better if you search the net, Best place to start is cnet.com/reviews.

  2. First of all - only a newbie would buy a "System".  You really want to buy well-respected components that fit your budget.  While the all-in-one systems for $300 look attractive - we get post after post after post here by disappointed users trying to do more than play  DVD's.

    My advice:

    - Find a best buy with a Magnolia attached.

    - Buy a stand-alone receiver from Yamaha (RX-V series), Dennon (any) or even the new Onkyo TX-SR505, 605 or 705 models.

    - Buy a sub woofer from either SVS or HSU Research (search on-line)

    - Take a music CD to Magnolia and audtition monitor-style speakers.  While the lower end speakers do NOT do well with music - a music CD does let you tell the difference between decent and total-c**p speakers.

    - Buy a PS3 to use as your DVD/BluRay/Game system.  It is actually one of the superior BluRay players and Sony is committed to keeping it up to date with all the changes

Follow this advice and you will have a modern, flexible system you can plug your iPod, HD Cable box, HD Sat box, etc. into and have a real 'System'.

  3. It depends on your budget. If you ever plan on upgrading, then i would pass on the HTIB.

you can put a very respectable home audio system up for $1000ish.

    onkyo sr605 receiver @$300 (refurb from onkyo.com)

    4 Klipsch F-1 Synergy @ $100 a pop (best buy)

    Klipsch Synergy C-3 Center @ $155

    bic v1220 12" 430w sub @ $150 (amazon)

if you want a HTIB for its simplicity, then check out the onkyo sr880 (although it is a 7.1). You can find them refurbed on onkyo.com (full warranty) for $300ish all the time.

I happened to have these in my basement and although not audiophile quality, the system is decent for the coin.

  4. bose has the best sound but for a 5.1 system for bose would be like 2500$

I have yamaha and even if your watching something that's not surround sound it still does it WOW!!

  5. It really depends.  How much do you want to spend?

You could spend up to $10,000 on audio equipment in Magnolia at your local Best Buy.

If you're looking for a home theater in a box, I would check out Panasonic.
