What is the best American/traditional restaurant in New York City?

Something unique to NYC, no chains. I'm thinking like a nice tavern type setting or something very old school -no contemporary!

The Grammery Tavern is great.  Craft also has great food and service.

So many choices.  But Gramercy Tavern is probably #1.  Also consider Ben Benson's, Bluewater Grill.
