I am going to next year move into an apartment for graduate school. I was thinking of getting a pet. I love dogs a lot but I am not really a fan of small breeds. They bark a lot more than big dogs. I am also always scared to step on them. I was looking and saw some cat breeds that have similiar behavior as dogs. Which would you recomend me to get and why?

1. Small Dog breed like Yorkie or Maltese?

2. Cat such as Siberian Cats or Maine Coon?

3. Risk it s***w it and get good size dog like Border Collie or Doverman Pincher?

  1. i would maybe recommed birds

  2. a small dog would be best. cats like room to play and hide and a big dog will go beserk ( i should know!)

  3. dog is not a good idea in an apartment unless you are on main floor, just about impossible to house train a pup if you cannot get it out the door immediately..and if you are in school you are gone too much for any breed..

most landlords will not let you have cat or dog..and really if you get either how do  you know you will be able to keep if for its lifetime (until you own your own home)? what if you have to move?

    I suggest a CAT from a shelter

did you know that in USA alone, over 8 million cats are euthanized every year.. many of these are between 1 and 2 years of age.. killed for not being kittens any more

go to a shelter and save one of them

  4. if you knew the big dog was good and quiet most of the time and if your there to take it to the park so it dosent jump around the apartment then can get a big dog if you apartment allow them but if you dont want to risk get a small dog and a cat

  5. Rats.  :P  They do well in apartments, are intelligent and snuggly.

No, seriously, large dogs have been shown to be very good in apartments so long as you walk them.  They tend to settle down and relax and be quiet more.  I know many greyhound and husky apartment dogs.

HOWEVER, most apartments have size requirements.  And breed restrictions.  Dogs like Dobies and Pit bulls tend to be discriminated against, and many apartments have "No dog over 25 lbs" rules.  So that's something to keep in mind.

  6. I would just get fish. They are pretty simple and can't really cause trouble in an apartment.
