  1. an all purpose/general purpose saddle, if ur just starting out

  2. a lightly used all-purpose saddle

  3. That would depend on what you plan on doing.

Do you jump? If so, I would really recommend a close contact saddle. If you do dressage, get a dressage saddle.

I've always disliked all-purpose saddles, most aren't forward enough to jump in properly and are too forward to do dressage in properly. As a beginning rider you don't want to be fighting a saddle to get the right position, and with an ap saddle you probably will end up that way.

Also, don't buy some cheap crappy leather saddle... it's not worth the money. Don't even think about one of those cheapo "starter package" things that have a saddle, bridle, and everything else all sold together. Those are usually junk. If you're on a tight budget, either buy a used leather saddle of a nicer brand, or a synthetic saddle. Wintec makes wonderful synthetic saddles (I'd especially recommend their dressage saddles), and if you want a nice mid-price range leather jumping saddle consider Collegiate.

The most important thing is that whatever saddle you get fits you and your horse properly. Try to find somewhere that will let you test-ride the saddle or where you can take it back if it doesn't fit.

  4. I would get a jumping saddle if you wish to porgess farther in jumping, see if you can get one slightly used or try to purches a test ride one from Dover. I got a Pessoa used (lightly) jump saddle for $500, so look around your local tack shop is good if they carry used saddles.

If you would also like to show in dressage or are going to compete in Eventing, you sould also get a dressage saddle. Wintecs are good but I dont like sinthectic saddles-however you might and the are somewhat inexpensive. I would good for a Collegate or Curcuit both are $799 at Dover, both are quite good. I have ridden in both and liked them!
