(To the above poster, Spybot takes care of spyware and adware--not viruses. But it is a useful program to clear out things virus scanners won't get).

I've had both AVG and Avast, and I stuck with Avast. AVG's constant nagging to update was just too annoying. They both seem to be about equally effective.

Most people will tell you AVG, but the people who do don't really know anything about computers, Avast is much better.  Both have free versions.

Avast. Search it on google, and find the PERSONAL one. Then register it by email, this is free, and it keeps it activated for 1 year. You then need to re-register every year. This is only to be sure you are still using it, so it doesn't send you updates you don't need.
