I'm travelling to France in a few days and I'm really excited. most of our meals have already been planned out because it is a school trip but we will have to order a few meals of our own and I'm kind of a picky eater. I definetly don'tlike any kind of sea food or mushrooms. I'm not good in French so if you have any suggestions for some good things to order can you please tell me what it is in French and then describe what it is in English so that I know if it's something I'll actually like? Thanks.

  1. Many of the very best things to eat in France are very simple and will be familiar to you.

Things like Poulet roti (roast chicken), Cotes d'agneau grillees (lamb chops) and Pave de rumsteack grille frites (a steak and french fries) aren't that different from what you have at home although you will find that French chef's cook to a very high standard and even simple things will taste especially good.

Some dishes may be unfamiliar to you but in the same general class as things you eat at home.

Boeuf Bourguignon chunks of beef cooked in red wine is just a stew as is  Boeuf en daube.

Pot-au-Feu (beef, carrots, potato, onions and celery) is the French version of pot roast.

Steak Hache is a ground beef patty (no ketchup, lettace, tomatoe and bun tho) and Steak Hachis or Hachis Parmentier is a ground beef and potato pie. (Steak tartar, by the way, is RAW ground beef..very good in my opinion but perhaps not what you'd like)

Cassoulet is the French version of baked beans  with garlic sausage, duck or goose, and chunks of pork but no brown sugar or molasses as in Boston Baked beans.

Choucroute Garni comes from Alsace, the part of France that has a very strong German influence. Its consists of various pork products, (bratwursts, frankfurters, pork chops or bacon can be amongst these) slow cooked with saurkraut, and white wine.

  2. French fries is best food

  3. Here are some safeties I can almost guarantee you'll like, even if you have no taste for the strong flavors (think blue cheese, coffee) that are the hallmark of french cuisine:

Quiche ("keesh") - it's pretty much thick scrambled eggs in a (non-sweet) pie crust. Quiche Lorraine is the classic, made with pork and swiss cheese).

Crêpes (pronounced "crehps" in French) -- superthin pancakes good for dessert (crêpes sucres) with stuff like chocolate inside or as a main dish (crêpes salés) filled with meats, veggies, and cheeses.

Ratatouille (approximately "rah-tah-twee") - squashes and various other veggies in a tomato sauce. Typical of Provence, a southeastern region.

Baguette (bag-get) - means a long loaf of bread but also the simple sandwiches that can be made with them, good for a lunch on-the-go. Watch out for the sometimes nasal-burning mustard/moutarde (moo-tard).

Among the milder cheeses are Brie and Camembert.

If you get bored with the French, it's also worth checking out a Moroccan or Algerian restaurant for some authentic dishes (think: couscous).

  4. French pastries are among the best in the world (except for the apple pie which is very tart in comparision with apple pie in the US  and UK).  Omelettes are a sure bet. Pain de son (oat bread) looks like tubes and are great if fresh. There are so many kinds of foods and if you are not sure of what you are ordering, bring a pocket English/French dictionary with you.  Stuff to avoid based on your tastes:  champignons (mushrooms), truffeln (truffles), fruits de mer (literally "fruits of the sea" or seafood), homarde (lobster), moules (mussels), poisson (fish), colin (really bad fish-- very tough and I like fish.

  5. You should try the frog legs with garlic butter, parsley (advice: never deep fried!)  and mixed salad with walnuts..... delicious!   :P reminds me of chicken's meat but even more tender.

Wow! I'm going to cook some right now!! :D

  6. Chopped Horse Steak
