Well i suggest the JVC everio 35X zoom.Special value on HSN for today,saw it loved it.I would get one but I my JVC Mini Dv is not even 7 years old.I would recommend it.On HSN it was 300 but that offer is gone for good.I saw it on Walmart website for 429 i consider that a good price.

Then again if you budget had no limits i would recommend a very nice specified HD camera.Good Luck

I understand that the answer above mine is quite detailed, but give mine a second glance.

I too am a young, aspiring film maker. My friends and I needed to create a film for our Spanish 2 Class. We had a terrible camcorder and were in dire need of a new one. We decided that HD was the best way to go. We searched for probably one month. Best Buy, Fry's, and Circuit City all probably know me by name as of now. After rigorous searching, the model camera we found that best suited our budget, and preference was the Canon Vixia HV30.

The camera delivers amazing quality. For professional filming, we found that the three preset zoom speeds were invaluable to creating smooth zoom shots (though I recommend a dolly over zooming). The combined effects of 24 fps and Cine Mode is what distinguished our project from all the other groups as a serious film and not a home-movie.

The Sony Professional HVR-Z1U 3CCD High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00097H... was a favorite that made reality shows, documentaries, and cable tv shows you see today

The Panasonic AG-HVX200 Pro Camcorder with DVCPRO-HD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OVF... is very popular and its predecessor made a lot of the reality shows, documentaries and cable TV shows you see today like the Sony above

Now consumer:

- You have the storage choices of HDV, Blueray miniDV, hard drive, and flash memory.  We highly recommend HDV (miniDV) for most situations, but other options may fit your needs better.  We primarily use the Panasonic AYDVM63PQ 63/42 Minute Professional Quality Mini-DV Digital Tape, 10 Pack http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ANC... because it is twice the quality and half the price of consumer level tape in Wal-Mart.

The Hitachi DZ-BD7HAF BluRay 5.3MP DVD Hybrid High Definition Camcorder with 30GB Hard Drive and 10x Optical Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00159J... is a hybrid that has BOTH Blueray mini DVD and an internal hard drive.  Its little brother is slightly more economical at around $1,000

One of our favorites is the Sony HDR-HC9 6MP MiniDV High Definition Handycam Camcorder + Deluxe Accessory Kit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015CT...  - It stores video on very economical HDV (miniDV).  The kit actually comes with a lot of the things you might actually need for consumer situations.  It uses a CMOS system that is half the weight of CCD and uses half the power of CCD - allowing you to run twice as long on the same battery.  Probably the most impressive feature on this camcorder is its ability to take very good still photos.  Most HD camcorders (including our professional HVR-V1U) take a 3mp photo or less.

The Canon VIXIA HF100 Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001141... is very popular right now.  It records to flash memory cards like the A-DATA 16GB Turbo SDHC Class 6 Memory Card http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010LP... which do come in smaller more economical sizes.  Canon has some of the best stabilization around, and this camera also records full 1920x1080 HD in 30p and 24p modes.  The most impressive feature is the instant focus.  The camera is supposed to always be in focus or take less than a second to find and fix focus.
