Looking to live in a small, fairly isolated town on the coast of Ireland. I need train access to Dublin. Many thanks for your suggestions.

  1. It's got to be Bray, south of Dublin, one of the nicest places on earth.

  2. cork

  3. Depends on the size of the town and mainly the conveniences you're looking for... Not far from Dublin there are Dun Laoghaire, Howth, Bray, and many more.

  4. I would say Cork!

  5. Why are people saying Cork? are you people stupid??

    Bray is close

  6. Yeah- -Bray! I live in Bray! I agree - one of the nicest places on earth! Its a 35 min train ride, or 50 min bus ride.

  7. skerries is lovely and it takes about 20 mins on the train into dublin.

  8. If you want to head north of Dublin then Donabate, Rush or Lusk are all within the commuter belt for Dublin via train and have fairly small populations. Skerries is a lovely town also and on the train route too. I would recommend it above the other ones I've mentioned only cos I spent many a happy childhood day there having picnics in the car watching the sealions/seals (not sure which). There's also Malahide or Portmarnock or Howth. Howth is a fishing port so prob larger than you're looking for. Malahide and Portmarnock would also be more populous than the ones further out.

Southside as mentioned before I reckon Greystones would be more to your liking than Bray.

All the best with your decisions anyway.

www.movetoireland.ie and tourism site www.discoverireland.ie might be of use.

  9. How isolated do you want?

I live in Bray and I like it a lot- it's handier than a lot of the surrounding Wicklow towns like Greystones etc- but is still very close to them so you can enjoy some of the benefits.

Bray seafront is beautiful (although the beach is a bit hit and miss) there are some lovely restaurants such as Campo di Fiori (nice Italian)... and now they've started having farmers markets by the mermaid(great theatre) although they're still quite irregular keep ears open and they're worth it.

Greystones has larger array of good restaurants and some interesting boutiques but is very close to Bray so easily get a dart or bus 84/184 the little bit further 10/15min

Enniskery with beautiful Powerscourt is also nearby and so is Avoca handweavers

Dart takes 40-50mins with darts every 5mins at peak hours generally 10-15min wait, at the most 20(unless darts playing up)

However if your looking for more isolated Wicklow has beautiful shops and is close to beach, they only have one or two trains a day though but 133 bus goes regularly

Or Kilcoole(or Glenroe from tv) just past Greystones, same train as kilcoole is irregular, however 84 buses are regular, can get from town or dart to bray/greystones and pick up bus from there

Eh I hope that helps, if 50 mins is too long a commute Monkstown is only 20mins from dublin, 5/10 from dun laoighaire and is also quite nice, or perhaps dalkey 35-40mins from dublin

  10. Laytown, small but not far from a lot of stuff like Drogheda.

  11. bray and howth are lovely and a short train distance!

  12. Cork is not a short train ride to Dublin ,beautiful as it is. However Greystones is and its on the "dart" too. Beautiful!

  13. Define short train ride? Because I would suggest Wexford or something, (as its sunny and happy, and has deadly shops and boats etc etc.) but its like an hour and a half train ride from Dublin, BUT if you mean closer to Dublin then may I suggest Howth, I love Howth as Im mad into harbour towns and the like, and its about a 20 min train ride into Dublin city, I hope to live in Howth some day.

  14. hi you there

bray is the best and i see you got an answer there saying cork well i live in cork and cork to Dublin is 2 hours by train if it is a short train ride you looking for Bary your town

  15. I'd say a town in County Wicklow
