What is the best Mexico tourist city close to Tx border ...coming from Dallas Tx?

I am planning a trip in end of July to Mexico. I would be travelling by road from Dallas TX. What is the closest Mexican tourist spot? Does someone know how much time it takes from Dallas to get to the Mexico border? I have read people recommending Monterrey. How far would it be from Dallas?. Any info is helpful. Thanks.

None of the border towns are good places to visit.  Monterrey would be the closest and best choice.  See map below.  It is about a 9 hr drive.   You will need to get a car permit at the border , and Mexican car ins.

We went to South Padre Islands (awesome place by the way), which is close to the border (it is in Texas itself though).......(the reason I know its close to the Mexican border is that they have border patrol there, and we had to show our passports when we were coming back).........

It took us about 16 odd hours to drive down from Dallas. I think the border is an hour away from Padre Islands..........I am not too sure though.
