  1. It's all a matter of personal preference.  I really like Macs but sadly i cant afford one so i'm currently dual booting windows and linux.  You also forgot solaris but i don't know anyone who uses it.  I like the aero theme in Windows Vista but its just too buggy for me so if i would go with windows i'd pick windows xp with a vista transformation pack.  Linux is also really nice and there are a ton of different variations to choose from and it's hard to come by a virus or spy-ware for linux or mac while there becoming more popular so are jerk offs writing viruses for them but windows is the most vulnerable of the 4.  You might also want to search Hyperspace, its a new mini operating system from Phoenix software.  It's going to be an "instant on" operating system which means when you turn it on you will be able to use a word processor and an internet browser and other programs while you wait for XP or Vista to load.  It has a 4 second boot time.

  2. My preference is Linux, the reasons being too many to list here. Suffice to say this link reveals all http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/

    LUg.

  3. Windows XP SP2. It was the best OS when I had it, never had any issues with it ever. Vista on the other hand can get gayish at times, runs too many unauthorized (by me, not the computer) background programs, eats up ram, but XP runs smooth. Mac OS's would be awesome if you could flawlessly run it on an AMD2+ MB system, but there's too many issues with it. I've tried...and was defeated. I say WinXP, but am content with Vista Ultimate (mod from Home Ed.). Mac systems ROCK! PC's ROCK too.

  4. OS X or any version of linux running kde 4 shell.

  5. I use Windows at work and OpenSuse with KDE on my laptop at home (that I'm typing this on). To me, OpenSuse makes much more sense and is easier to use. Plus, on this old Compaq NC6000 it really flies. MUCH faster than the similar laptops we have Windows XP on at work. I have no lockup problems, no freezes, no viruses, no malware and I haven't rebooted the laptop in about two weeks. Plus it prints to my networked LaserJet just fine.
