i have 1 and a hamster and a sheep dog

I think it depends on your lifestyle....and where you live. If you work a lot perhaps an aquarium or a cat. If you are the outdoorsy type or if you have a house than it could be a dog. If you're a homebody or operate a home based business perhaps a bird or other animal.

Depends what you are looking for. Do you want a companion or something that looks really cool or something exotic?

In general I would say cats. They are independent, aren't prone to a lot of health problems, clean, make great company, and there are millions that need good homes.
