  1. Best train of any type for speed: Japanese mag-lev.

    Best conventional train for speed? France's TGV (or, in North America, the Acela Express).

    Best locomotive for classic looks? An EMD F-unit.

    Best locomotive for medium-duty roadswitching? A GP38-2

    Best locomotive for reliable freight service? An SD70M or SD40-2 (or EMD's similar export units).

    Best locomotive for thick diesel exhaust?  Any Alco.

    Best switcher for efficiency and clean exhaust?  A genset or hybrid.

    Best diesel freight locomotive for efficiency and clean exhaust?  A GEVO or SD70ACe/SD70M-2.

    The F40PH is a very fine locomotive that has more than proven its worth in passenger and commuter service over three decades.  It's a reliable and versatile locomotive.  But in most of the categories above it's nowhere near the top--decently fast (for a diesel), pleasing but not really classic looks (give it another couple of decades), mediocre performance in freight service and switching (it's been tried), and neither lots of smoke nor particularly good efficiency or pollution control.

    I like the TVG, dunno if it's the "best in the world", but i've taken it, it's very modern, fast etc
