Colchester zoo is great. Lots of different animals and large area.

You can get a train to Colchester from London, then the bus or a taxi straight to the Zoo.

Buy tickets online for better value, but take a picnic.

Depends how far outside London you mean but Colchester Zoo is pretty good.

In London you have the London Zoo and the Battersea Park Children's Zoo.  For farm animals there is the Vauxhall City Farm and Deen City Farm.  Further south there is the British Wildlife centre (lovely place for photographers).  Whipsnade is a bit of a drive but nice.  There is also the Longleat Safari Park (near the Center Parcs).  For birds there is Birdworld.  For fish there is the London Aquarium and a small aquarium at the Horniman museum (a few goats and chickens there too).  If you've got kids then Battersea is the best.

Best private zoo/park I know of is called Drusillas near Alfriston in Sussex.

To get to Alfriston if using public transport, you need to take a train [frequent] from London Victoria to Eastbourne - then take the following bus from Eastbourne to Alfriston - route 126.

If you want to go to Alfriston by car, there is a quite large car park in the village - not sure how much but quite cheap for all day.

Alfriston is a great day out and I very strongly recommend it.
